How to prepare for your portrait shoot

Portrait photography for us means capturing the real you, and having fun in the process. A shoot with Karl is both relaxed and filled with creative energy to bring out the very best in you, creating natural and vibrant photographs.

There is no doubt that a setting you feel comfortable in goes a long way to creating natural and true images. A locational lifestyle shoot is a fantastic way of putting you and your family at ease. Our years of experience tells us that using natural light where ever possible means your pictures will look natural and true to you.

For your lifestyle shoot, here are a few hints and tips to help you prepare for your shoot:

  • For family groups, photographs looks great when the clothing colour scheme is considered, for example, everyone in jeans with a bright top.
  • Bring a few items of clothing to suit the location eg if your shoot is in a park, perhaps bring a pair of trainers or raincoat.
  • If you will have young members of your family, remember to bring drinks and snacks.
  • Sometimes taking photographs can be hard work for children, so remember to bring some toys and maybe their favourite teddy.
  • Try to plan your photo session around baby’s sleeping or feeding routine, so that everyone is feeling happy and refreshed for the shoot.
  • Let Karl know if any one n your party has any walking or access difficulties, so that the photo shoot location can be selected appropriately.

Whilst lifestyle shoots are without doubt the most natural way to capture images, sometime you just want to go that little bit further and create images with a difference. Our creative zone (studio) is that place where we can control everything, which allows us to push the creative boundaries ever further.

Prior to your shoot we will discuss what type of images you want to create, so we can have our studio ready and waiting for you. Karl's photographic passions and his want for the unusual will drive the session, taking quick stops along the way a change of outfit, or maybe a backdrop change.

For your studio session, here are a few suggestions to help you prepare for your shoot:

  • Try to prepare your children for having photographs taken by telling them about flashes of light and the lighting rigs, as these can sometimes be quite daunting.
  • We have 3 studio backdrop colours, black, white and dark red, so you can bring a few changes of outfit that contrast to those colours. If you all choose a similar colour scheme, we can get some really dramatic shots!
  • We will ask you to remove your socks and shoes for studio shoots, so you may want to paint your pinkies!
  • Try to plan your photo session around young children’s sleeping or feeding routine, so that everyone is feeling happy and refreshed for the shoot.
  • Bring some favourite personal items or things that represent you for example, favourite teddy, best handbag, cherished necklace etc, so that we can capture what means the most to you.

By the end of the session we'll have created you something very special and completely unique to you. And a few weeks later your stunning new artwork will be in place, as you imagined.
